Even though Adam Smith wrote his great book, The Wealth of Nations, more than 200 years ago, people still have trouble understanding him. His work was later supplemented by greats such as Frederic Bastiat, Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman, who showed that free markets are the best way to organise economic activity.

Yet, politicians and bureaucrats have chosen to ignore their teachings, invariably with horrendous results. Goofball Economics is meant to be a collection of seemingly the most extreme cases of government stupidity, which turn out to be fairly common.
